DfE: Content migration / site management

How the DfE managed its migration

Challenge

The pioneering Department for Education wasdeveloping new, targeted communications channels for tomorrow’s digitalcitizens and educational professionals.

It needed a flexible team of web editors with an educationsector background to help plan, populate and launch the new e-channels.

Our response

Redhouse Lane supplieda team of editors to review, edit and organise thousands of pages of content, standardising the tone of voice and tagging items to make them easier to find.

The first phase was to polish the existing content anddevelop a content strategy – new content guidelines, standards and processesfor efficient delivery.

We then worked with policy and publicity teams to:

  • map all content for the new e-channels
  • agree editorial style and tone of voice.

Result

Our team’s role expanded to cover:

  • full website management, including compiling, analysing and acting on usage statistics – for example, adding links tohomepage hot topics or promo boxes to reflect what users were searching for
  • ministerial speechwriting
  • liaising with policy teams to discuss how, whereand when to present their online content and editorial advice
  • media monitoring – checking forums, blogs andwebsites for key terms and using these findings to fine-tune the approach
  • social media – exploiting new opportunities, contributing to the DfE’s Twitter feed and maintaining its Flickr account.
